Arnold Dreyblatt is an American composer, visual artist, and one of the second generation of New York minimal composers. He was born in New York City in 1953 and later moved to Europe in 1984, where he has resided ever since. Dreyblatt studied music with composers Pauline Oliveros, La Monte Young, and Alvin Lucier, and is known for his unique approach to composition and sound generation. His music often features the utilization of modified and self-invented instruments, employing just intonation tuning and resonant systems of his own design, and can be characterized by its microtonal harmonies and rich overtones.
As a founder of the Orchestra of Excited Strings, Dreyblatt has developed a style that integrates rigorous mathematical precision with a distinctly intuitive approach. His work spans through various forms, from ensemble compositions to solo performances, and encompasses a spectrum from text-sound pieces to large-scale opera and theater projects. Among his numerous releases are "Resolve," "Shuffle Effect," and "Flight Path," showcasing his avant-garde explorations in sound. Critically acclaimed works like "Nodal Excitation" and "Animal Magnetism" demonstrate his continued evolution as an artist. Moreover, his conceptual installation "Who's Who In Central & East Europe 1933" reflects an interdisciplinary approach, blending historical inquiry with sound art. Dreyblatt continues to be an influential figure in contemporary music circles, pushing the boundaries of how we understand and experience music as an art form.
