Spanner Banner—born Joseph Anthony Bonner in Rock Hall, St. Andrew, Jamaica—stands out as one of the island’s most enduring reggae recording artists and songwriters. He comes from a musical family: among his 11 siblings are celebrated artists like Richie Spice and Pliers, of the hit duo Chaka Demus & Pliers. Spanner got his big break with the single "Life Goes On," produced by Winston Riley, which not only dominated local charts but also made waves internationally, setting the stage for a long career ahead.
Signed to Island Records in the early ’90s, Spanner Banner quickly made an impact with albums like "Chill," produced by legendary duo Sly & Robbie, which earned a Jamaican Music Award for Best Produced Album. With hits such as "Universal Love," "You Gotta Be," and "Michelle," his smooth vocals and uplifting messages resonated far beyond Jamaica. After a successful run with major labels, he founded his own imprint, Sweet Angel Productions, and continued touring extensively across Europe, North America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Spanner Banner’s music blends classic reggae warmth with heartfelt songwriting, making him a beloved figure in the genre.
