Margaret Price (13 April 1941 – 28 January 2011) was a Welsh soprano, renowned for her pure, clear voice and considered one of the leading lyric sopranos of her generation. Born in Blackwood, Wales, Price displayed musical talents from a young age and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Initially focusing on mezzo-soprano roles, she transitioned to soprano parts, which brought her significant acclaim.
Throughout her illustrious career, Price became particularly admired for her performances in Mozart operas, as evidenced by her highly-praised recordings of "Così fan tutte" and "Don Giovanni." She also demonstrated a deep affinity for German lieder, interpreting the works of Schumann, Schubert, Brahms, and Mahler with sensitivity and emotional depth—as showcased in her renditions of Mahler's Rückert-Lieder and various Lieder albums. Price's repertoire was not limited to these genres, however, as she also received accolades for her powerful performances in Verdi's Requiem and the grandiose Mahler's Symphony No. 8 "Symphony of a Thousand." Her voice graced many of the world's most prestigious opera stages, and her recordings continue to be a testament to her technical mastery and profound musicality. Despite retiring from the operatic stage in 1999, Margaret Price's legacy endures through her extensive discography and the lasting impression she left on the world of classical music.
