K. P. Brahmanandan

K. P. Brahmanandan was a beloved South Indian playback singer from Kerala, born on February 22, 1946, in Kadakkavoor, north of Trivandrum, as the third of eight kids to parents Pachan and Bhavani. Trained in Carnatic music from a young age under his uncle and later the legendary D. K. Jayaraman, he kicked off his career with All-India Radio tunes before bursting into Malayalam cinema in 1969 with the hit "Manathe kayalin" from *Kalli Chellamma*, going on to lend his smooth voice to over 160 songs, including classics like "Priyamullavale" (*Thekkan Kaattu*), "Neela Niseethini" (*CID Naseer*), and gems for director Bharathan like "Maaleya Lepanam" (*Eenam*).

He also sang in a dozen Tamil films for composers like Ilaiyaraaja and Shankar-Ganesh, and even stepped into composing for two Malayalam movies, *Malayathippennu* (1989) and *Kanninilaavu* (1990). Honored with awards like the All-India Radio Award (1965), Critics Award (1999), and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award (2002), he passed away at home in Kadakkavoor on August 10, 2004, at 58, survived by wife Usha, son Rakesh (a fellow singer), and daughter Athira—his legacy lives on through the Brahmanandan Foundation and timeless tracks.
