András Fejér is a Hungarian cellist born in 1955 into a deeply musical family—his father was a cellist and conductor, and his mother was a pianist. He picked up the cello at age seven, inspired by (or maybe nudged into it by) his dad’s reluctance to endure the early sounds of a beginner violinist, and soon immersed himself in chamber music at family quartet gatherings. Since founding the acclaimed Takács Quartet in 1975 with classmates at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Fejér has made the ensemble his main professional focus, though he occasionally steps out as a soloist.
Now based in Boulder, Colorado as Artist in Residence at the University of Colorado, Fejér is celebrated for both performing and teaching. He enjoys life in the Rockies with his family, relishing the outdoors and nurturing new generations of musicians. The Takács Quartet, known for its expressive interpretations and recording triumphs like the complete Beethoven string quartets, continues to dazzle audiences worldwide, with Fejér as a key anchor and inspiration for nearly five decades.
