He refined his musical skills at the Berklee College of Music from 1980 to 1984, where he studied under the renowned guitarist John Scofield. In 1985, Haerter founded the group *Intergalactic Maidenballet*, with which he toured Europe and released several albums, including *Squaredance* (1989) and *Gulf* (1994). His music often features collaborations with prominent jazz musicians. For example, he worked with Dewey Redman in a quintet that performed over 150 concerts, and he collaborated with Michael Brecker on several projects.
