Julija Hartig is a Serbian-Dutch violinist born in 1972 in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, into a musical family where she kicked off her violin lessons at just five years old. A young talent, she snagged several awards early on, studied at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, then headed to the Netherlands in 1994, graduating from Utrecht Conservatory and landing spots like concertmaster of the Radio Chamber Philharmonic since 2000 and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra since 2013.
She's a busy bee as a soloist and chamber player across Europe, teaming up often with pianist Reineke Broekhans in their award-winning duo, plus groups like ROctet, St. George Strings, and the Grammy-winning LUDWIG collective. Her debut album *Dark Velvet* (2022), a musical autobiography of her youth, nabbed the Edison Klassiek award for Best Newcomer in 2023 at age 51—proving it's never too late for a breakthrough. Now, she's diving into her multicultural roots (Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, Austrian, and Yugoslavian) with the upcoming *Black Rainbow* (2026), blending violin, voice, electronics, and works by Janáček, Say, and Enescu to explore identity, migration, and ancestral memory alongside Broekhans and Akim Moiseenkov.
