Goteborg Baroque

Göteborg Baroque is a leading vocal and instrumental ensemble based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Founded in 2003 by artistic director Magnus Kjellson, the ensemble specializes in early music, particularly from the Baroque period. Kjellson conducts the group from the keyboard, creating a unique and intimate sound through the interplay between the musicians and singers. The ensemble presents its concerts at the German Christianae Church in Gothenburg, where they showcase both well-known and lesser-known works, often re-premiering compositions that have been overlooked for centuries. Their repertoire includes works by prominent composers like Buxtehude and Bach, as evident in their recordings of "Membra Jesu nostri" and Bach's tenor arias.

Göteborg Baroque is recognized for its passion for early music, and the ensemble's work has been awarded several honors, including "The Swedish Early Music Award." Magnus Kjellson's leadership has been pivotal in establishing the ensemble as one of Northern Europe's prominent musical groups. The ensemble recently received significant funding from Sten A Olsson's Foundation for Research and Culture, which enabled them to pursue ambitious musical projects and even commission a unique claviorganum – a combination of harpsichord and organ – an instrument similar to those used by Georg Friedrich Handel in the 18th century.
