Ahmed Figo is a pioneering Egyptian musician and DJ from Cairo, best known as one of the originators of the Mahraganat music genre, a vibrant fusion of traditional Egyptian folk (shaabi), electronic dance music (EDM), and hip-hop. Starting around 2004 in the working-class neighborhood of El-Salam City, northeast Cairo, Figo innovatively blended oriental melodies with Western beats, using drum machines and heavy autotune to create a new street music style that quickly gained popularity across Egypt. His early work with collaborators like El Sadat, Alaa Fifty, and Feelo was instrumental in launching Mahraganat from underground circles to the mainstream, shaping the soundtrack of urban Egyptian life with themes ranging from celebration to social struggles. Figo and his crew notably transformed their neighborhood's image by providing artistic opportunities and inspiring a cultural movement among the youth.
Besides his influence on the Mahraganat scene, Ahmed Figo has performed in numerous concerts worldwide, including France and England, spreading the genre globally. His music often features catchy, repetitive rhythms and a lively, danceable vibe that resonates deeply with the working classes of Cairo and beyond. Figo's role extends beyond music production to social impact, as he helped channel young people's energy from negative influences toward creative expression through music and performance.
