Carlos Guastavino

Carlos Guastavino (1912–2000) was an Argentine composer known for blending lush Romantic-era harmonies with the earthy charm of Argentine folk music. Nicknamed the “Schubert of the Pampas,” he poured his love for his homeland into over 500 works, mostly piano pieces and art songs. Tracks like *Rocío* and *La Rosa y El Sauce* showcase his knack for hummable melodies tinged with nostalgia, while *Se equivocó la paloma* (a demo of his iconic song based on a Rafael Alberti poem) became a cultural staple in Latin America. Though he studied formally in Buenos Aires and Santa Fe, Guastavino’s music stayed rooted in Argentine traditions, earning him a beloved status at home even as he flew under the radar globally. His *Sonata No. 2* and *Las Presencias* cycle (check out the live *Jeromita Linares*!) prove he could swing from fiery virtuosity to delicate introspection—all while keeping that signature folkloric soul.
