Jimmy Rowles

Jimmy Rowles was a highly respected American jazz pianist, composer, and occasional vocalist, known for his sophisticated harmonic sense and understated playing style. Born in 1918 in Spokane, Washington, Rowles built a rich career accompanying some of the greatest jazz and popular vocalists of the 20th century, including Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Peggy Lee. He had a special talent for enhancing a singer's performance with his sensitive and intuitive accompaniment, and he was a favorite among vocalists for his lyrical, supportive touch.

Over the years, Rowles also recorded extensively as a leader and collaborated with many top-tier jazz musicians. His composition "The Peacocks" has become a modern jazz standard, revered for its haunting beauty and intricate structure. Later in his life, he mentored and performed with Diana Krall early in her career. Whether behind the piano or penning lush, evocative tunes, Jimmy Rowles left a lasting impact on the jazz world with his elegance, wit, and deep musicality.
