Wolfgang Windgassen

Wolfgang Windgassen (1914-1974) was a German operatic tenor, particularly known for his performances in the operas of Richard Wagner. He was born in Barmen, Germany, and studied singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. He made his debut in 1937 at the Dresden State Opera, and went on to sing at major opera houses throughout the world. Windgassen was known for his powerful voice and his dramatic intensity, and he was considered one of the leading Wagnerian tenors of his generation. He died in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1974.
