Scottish National Jazz Orchestra

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) is one of the United Kingdom’s premier jazz ensembles, founded in 1995 by saxophonist and composer Tommy Smith. Based in Scotland, SNJO is known for its adventurous programming and high-level musicianship, often blending classic jazz repertoire with contemporary works and cross-genre collaborations. Over the years, the orchestra has tackled the music of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Kenny Wheeler, as well as expanded into compelling reinterpretations of classical compositions by Mozart and Gershwin.

The orchestra frequently works with internationally renowned guest artists and has become a staple of the UK jazz scene, performing at major festivals and venues. Their discography reflects a wide range of styles and bold artistic statements, from the folk-jazz fusion of Where Rivers Meet to genre-spanning projects like Rhapsody in Blue - Live. Through its commitment to both honoring jazz traditions and pushing creative boundaries, the SNJO continues to play a vital role in shaping modern jazz in Scotland and beyond.
