Mykola Lysenko (1842-1912) was a seminal Ukrainian composer, pianist, conductor, and musicologist, often hailed as the father of Ukrainian classical music. Born into a noble family in the village of Hrynky in the Kyiv Governorate of the Russian Empire (now Ukraine), Lysenko was deeply influenced by the cultural renaissance that was sweeping through Ukraine in the 19th century. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, which was one of the most prestigious music institutions of that time. However, his heart remained deeply rooted in the folk melodies and nationalistic fervor of his homeland.

Additionally, his numerous art songs collections, such as "The Art Songs, Pt. 1 - Nature" and "The Song Cycle - 'A Poet's Love,'" exhibit Lysenko's lyrical sensibilities and his ability to weave poetic themes with sophisticated melodies. His nationalistic composition "Prayer for Ukraine" remains a beloved and poignant anthem within Ukrainian culture.
