Josh White

Josh White was a hugely influential American folk and blues singer, guitarist, and actor. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, he started out as a "lead boy," guiding blind blues singers through the South in the Jim Crow era, learning directly from legends like Blind Blake. He went on to become a star in his own right, known for his smooth vocals, sophisticated guitar style, and powerful performances that often tackled social issues like racial injustice.

White's career spanned decades, from the 1930s through the 1960s, and he was a major figure in the folk revival. He recorded numerous albums, toured extensively, and even performed for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Though his career was later impacted by the Red Scare, his music and legacy continue to inspire and influence artists today. He's remembered as a true pioneer who brought folk and blues music to a wider audience and used his platform to advocate for equality.
