Marta Kubišová

Marta Kubišová is a celebrated Czech singer and a symbol of resistance and dignity during Czechoslovakia’s communist era. She rose to fame in the 1960s as part of the pop music trio Golden Kids, alongside Václav Neckář and Helena Vondráčková, and became known for her powerful voice and emotionally charged performances. Her song "Modlitba pro Martu" ("A Prayer for Marta") became an anthem of national unity and defiance after the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia.

After voicing opposition to the Soviet-backed regime, Kubišová was banned from performing in 1970, and she remained a prominent dissident, later becoming a signer of Charter 77, a major human rights manifesto. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, she returned to music and became an enduring voice in Czech culture. Her legacy goes far beyond her music—she's remembered as a courageous figure who used her voice, both literally and figuratively, to stand up for freedom.
