Augustin Pfleger

Augustin Pfleger was a German-Bohemian composer born around 1635 in Schlackenwerth (now Ostrov, Czechia). He was a notable figure of the 17th century Baroque music scene and worked as a court musician at Schlackenwerth before moving to positions at the courts of Mecklenburg in Güstrow and Schleswig-Holstein in Gottorf, where he served as Kapellmeister. Pfleger’s compositions include over 200 works in both German and Latin, with a strong focus on sacred music such as psalms, motets, and cantatas. His work anticipated the development of the German sacred cantata, blending rich vocal textures with liturgical themes. He returned to Schlackenwerth late in life, where he died sometime after July 1686.

Pfleger is recognized for his innovative contribution to Baroque music, particularly in the sacred genre, and his music remains a part of the repertoire for those exploring early German church music. His notable works include collections like "Psalmi, dialogi et motettae" and "Odae concertantes." Despite living centuries ago, his compositions have been recorded and performed in modern times, highlighting his enduring influence on the Baroque tradition.
