Angelic Upstarts

Angelic Upstarts are a seminal punk rock band with a career spanning several decades, revered for their outspoken political messages and a sound that blends the raw energy of punk with influences from Oi! and street punk genres. Formed in South Shields, England in 1977 by vocalist Thomas "Mensi" Mensforth and guitarist Ray Cowie, also known as "Mond," they quickly became known for their left-wing political stance and songs about working-class pride, anti-fascism, and rebellion against authority. Their music resonated with the disenfranchised youth of post-industrial Britain, providing a voice to those who felt marginalized by society.

Throughout their career, the Upstarts cultivated a reputation for explosive live shows and uncompromising, topical lyrics. They've weathered numerous lineup changes, yet Mensi has remained a constant, driving force. With seminal releases like "Teenage Warning" (1979) and "2,000,000 Voices" (1981), they've left an indelible mark on the punk scene. The more recent works, such as "Bullingdon Bastards" (2015) and the joint project "Angelic Upstarts / The Prowlers - Split EP" (2016), showcase the band's enduring commitment to social and political commentary, while compilations like "Singles A's & B's" serve as a testament to their prolific nature and sustained relevance in the punk rock landscape. Angelic Upstarts remain a beloved and influential force, their legacy characterized by unyielding integrity and the anthemic call to stand up and fight for your rights.
