Snagga Puss, born Norman Suppria on March 19, 1961 in Kingston, Jamaica, is a reggae and dancehall DJ known for his playful, cartoon-inspired vocal style. Growing up as one of 16 siblings in the Arnett Gardens area—a ghetto famously referenced in the Wailers’ song “Concrete Jungle”—Suppria started his music career as Dickie Ranking, then moved to New York to try his hand at rapping before returning to Jamaica in the early 1990s. Embracing the energy of classic cartoons, he adopted the stage name Snagga Puss and made a splash with his impersonations and energetic performances, leading to hits like “Whap Dem Merlene,” “Reggae Funky,” and “Christmas Time,” as well as collaborations with notable producers and artists.
His music blends dancehall energy with club-friendly beats, and he’s credited with inspiring new dance crazes and memorable party tracks throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s. Snagga Puss remains a lively figure in Jamaican music, known for his unique voice and ability to bring humor and excitement to the dancehall scene.
