Ethel

Ethel is a New York City-based contemporary string quartet known for blending classical rigor with genre-defying experimentation. Formed in 1998, the group (originally featuring Cornelius Dufallo, Mary Rowell, Ralph Farris, and Dorothy Lawson) became indie-classical trailblazers, collaborating with artists like Todd Rundgren and David Byrne while championing new works. Their releases like *Persist* and *The Wheel of Life* showcase their signature mix of lush textures and rhythmic urgency, often amplifying social themes through projects like *Documerica* (inspired by environmental photography). True road warriors, they’ve brought their amplified violins, viola, and cello to venues from concert halls to rock clubs, including the live energy captured on *State Theater New Jersey 2005*. Ethel thrives on reinvention—whether through improvisation, film scores, or collaborating with Native American artists on works like *The River*.
