Raful Neal was a revered American blues harmonica player and singer, known for his smooth, soulful sound and deep roots in the Louisiana blues tradition. Born in Baton Rouge in 1936, he became one of the key figures in the swamp blues scene that emerged in the region. He started out in the 1950s and was heavily influenced by blues legends like Little Walter. Neal was known not just for his solo work, but also for mentoring and inspiring a generation of blues musicians—his own sons included, most notably blues guitarist Kenny Neal.
Throughout his career, Raful Neal released several albums that showcased his rich harmonica playing and laid-back vocal style, including “Louisiana Legend” and “Old Friends.” He performed with artists such as Buddy Guy (who was once a member of his band) and maintained a strong regional following while garnering international respect among blues aficionados. Until his passing in 2004, Neal remained a staple of the Louisiana blues scene and left behind a legacy that still resonates in the genre today.
