Emanuel List

Emanuel List was a powerhouse bass who left his mark on opera's Golden Age with his rich, resonant voice and commanding stage presence. Born in Vienna in 1888 (some sources say 1891), this Jewish-Austrian singer became legendary for his Wagnerian roles like Hagen in *Götterdämmerung* and King Marke in *Tristan und Isolde*, which you'll hear shining in those historic recordings. After fleeing Nazi Europe in 1933, he became a Met Opera staple for over a decade, thrilling audiences with his collaborations with stars like Lotte Lehmann and conductors like Arturo Toscanini.

List's voice had a rare combo of depth and clarity that made him equally brilliant in comic roles – check out his scene-stealing Baron Ochs in *Der Rosenkavalier* recordings. Though he retired from the stage in 1950, those live performances and studio cuts (like the 1946 *Rosenkavalier* you mentioned) preserve his legacy as one of the great bass voices of the 20th century. Fun fact: He allegedly kept his vocal chops sharp into his 60s by singing Wagner in the shower daily!
