Johann Baptist Mayrhofer
Johann Baptist Mayrhofer was an Austrian poet and librettist who lived from 1787 to 1836. He's best known for his close friendship and creative collaboration with the composer Franz Schubert. Mayrhofer wrote the lyrics for a number of Schubert's songs, including the ones you've mentioned like "Auf der Donau" and "Fahrt zum Hades."
Mayrhofer's life wasn't always easy - he struggled with depression and worked as a censor for the Austrian government, a job he didn't particularly enjoy. Despite his personal challenges, his partnership with Schubert produced some beautiful and enduring works of music. Their friendship and artistic collaboration was a significant part of both men's lives and careers.
