Bethlehem

Bethlehem is a German extreme metal band formed in 1991, widely recognized as pioneers of "dark metal" and influential in shaping depressive suicidal black metal (DSBM). Known for their raw, chaotic sound and themes steeped in nihilism, mental anguish, and morbid poetry, their 1994 album *Dark Metal* became a cult classic, blending black metal with doom and avant-garde elements. The band’s lineup has shifted frequently over the years, with bassist Jürgen Bartsch remaining a constant driving force. Their later work, like the 2021 self-titled album *Bethlehem* and *Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia* (2016), continues to embrace unrelenting darkness, cryptic lyrics, and experimental vocals ranging from tortured shrieks to ghostly whispers. With releases like *Schatten aus der Alexander Welt* and *Lebe Dich Leer*, they’ve maintained a fiercely underground ethos while inspiring countless extreme metal acts.
