Moritz Winkelmann is a highly expressive and remarkable pianist known for his profound sincerity and soulful musicianship. A prizewinner of the International Beethoven Competition Bonn, Winkelmann has built a strong reputation for his interpretations of Beethoven's piano works. He has performed internationally with various orchestras and ensembles, including the Bonn Beethoven Orchestra, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, and the New York Classical Players. Critics have praised his playing for its powerful intensity, vivid expressiveness, and deep connection to the music, notably turning Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 into a "sound thriller of the finest kind".
Currently, Winkelmann is undertaking the ambitious project of recording all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas for the Berlin Classics label, with the project releasing editions in phases and aiming to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death. His approach to Beethoven combines historically informed performance practices with a fluid classical style, creating interpretations that are direct, pulsating, and free of sentimentality. Winkelmann treats Beethoven’s music with the intimacy and respect akin to friendship, offering listeners an engaging and balanced experience of these masterpieces. He is also a professor of piano at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts and regularly gives masterclasses internationally.
