Patachou

Henriette Ragon, better known by her stage name Patachou, was a French singer and actress who charmed the mid-20th-century music scene with her distinct voice and spirited performances. Born on June 10, 1918, in Paris, France, she began her career not as a singer, but as a restaurateur. In the post-war Parisian neighborhood of Montmartre, she operated a small restaurant – where the name "Patachou" was coined – that eventually became a popular nightspot. She became renowned for cutting off the ends of customers' ties, which was seen as a playful gesture that contributed to the relaxed atmosphere of her establishment.

Patachou's foray into music was almost accidental; she began singing at her own bistro to entertain guests, and her natural talent quickly garnered attention. Her interpretation of French chansons was both heartfelt and whimsical, leading to a successful recording career and international recognition. Her refreshing takes on songs like "Les amoureux des banc publics" and "Rue Lepic" encapsulated the essence of Parisian life and romance. Her performances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in the 1950s introduced her to American audiences, further establishing her as a transatlantic star. Live recordings from these appearances such as "À Paris" and "C'est Magnifique" capture the vibrant energy she brought to the stage. Throughout her career, Patachou not only sang but also took roles in film and theatre, demonstrating her versatility as an entertainer. She passed away on April 30, 2015, leaving behind a legacy as one of France's beloved performers.
