DRY&HEAVY

DRY&HEAVY is a Japanese reggae band that formed in the late 1990s, recognized for their unique blend of heavy dub and roots reggae with a distinctly Japanese touch. Founding members Shigemoto Nanao (also known as "Dry") and Takeshi Akimoto ("Heavy") lent the band its name, reflecting the "dry" drums and "heavy" bass sound that became their trademark. DRY&HEAVY drew inspiration from traditional Jamaican reggae acts, combining the genre's classic ethos with their own experimental edge, thus carving out a sound that was both authentic and innovative.

Capitalizing on their deep appreciation for dub, the band released notable works like "From Creation" and "Dub Creation" which demonstrate their skillful manipulation of soundscapes and bass-driven rhythms. They gained international acclaim through the collaborative effort "King Jammy Meets Dry & Heavy: In the Jaws of the Tiger," a testament to their prowess as it saw them working with the legendary King Jammy, a key figure in the development of dub music. Their album "Full Contact" showcased the band's ability to meld tight instrumentation with expansive sonic effects, while "One Punch" further solidified their reputation as pioneering artists in the Asian reggae scene, displaying the group's dedication to pushing the boundaries of the genre. As a cornerstone of Japan's reggae community, DRY&HEAVY has left an indelible mark on the genre's international tapestry.
