BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii metal band that has been revolutionizing the genre since their formation in 2010. The group initially began as a subunit of the female idol group Sakura Gakuin and was created by the talent agency Amuse, Inc. BABYMETAL consists of lead vocalist Suzuka Nakamoto, known by her stage name Su-metal, and backing vocalist Moa Kikuchi, known as Moametal. They were originally a trio, with Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) rounding out the group until her departure in 2018.
Blending the contrasting worlds of heavy metal and J-pop idol culture, BABYMETAL has cultivated a unique style called "kawaii metal" or "cute metal," characterized by the fusion of high-octane metal instrumentation with idyllic, catchy pop melodies and dynamic choreography. Their innovative sound and theatrical live performances have garnered a global fanbase and critical acclaim.
