Minny Pops were an influential Dutch post-punk and electronic band formed in Amsterdam in 1978 by musician Wally van Middendorp. Named after a Japanese toy drum machine, the group became known for their minimalist approach to electronic music, blending experimental sounds with stark, performance art-influenced visuals. They were closely associated with the UK post-punk scene and were the only Dutch band to release music on the iconic Factory Records, home to Joy Division and New Order.
Their early work, such as the single "Dolphin's Spurt," caught the attention of Factory Records' Tony Wilson, who helped bring them to British audiences. Minny Pops toured with Joy Division and earned a cult following for their confrontational live shows and unique sonic palette, which merged drum machines, synthesizers, and detached vocals. After disbanding in the 1980s, they reunited in the 2010s to perform live and release new material, including archival recordings and fresh tracks, reinvigorating interest in their pioneering sound.
