Les Ballets Africains

Les Ballets Africains is the national dance company of Guinea and represents not only a flourishing cultural emblem but also a pioneering force in the world of African performing arts. Founded in Paris in 1952 by Guinean choreographer Fodéba Keïta, the company has the distinction of being the first African ballet to gain international acclaim, blending traditional African dance, music, and folklore into stunning theatrical performances. Upon Guinea's independence in 1958, Les Ballets Africains were officially recognized as the national ensemble.

The troupe's performances are a dynamic fusion of rhythmic drumming, acrobatic dance moves, and vibrant costumes, aiming to preserve and portray the heritage and mythology of African culture through their art. Over the decades, they have toured globally, showcasing the diverse and rich traditions of West Africa, particularly those from the Mandingue (or Mandinka) cultural region, which spans several West African countries. Their recent releases such as "Memoire du Manding" and "Rétrospective de 1950 à nos jours - Live (Bolibana Collection)" reflect their continuous effort to document and celebrate the history and evolution of their art form, while also ensuring that the ancestral legacy of African tales and rhythms are carried forward to new generations.
