The Crests

The Crests were a New York-based doo-wop group that etched their name in the annals of American music history with their classic hits of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Formed in 1955, the group was notable for being one of the first interracial groups, with African American, Puerto Rican, and Italian members. They were led by the extraordinary vocal talents of Johnny Maestro, who later found success with the Brooklyn Bridge. The Crests are perhaps best remembered for the 1958 smash hit "16 Candles," which soared up the charts and became a timeless ballad for teen angst and celebration.

Throughout their career, The Crests captured the essence of the doo-wop era, producing a series of records that celebrated the innocence and the romanticism of the time. Their music library included a swath of harmonious gems such as "Step By Step", "The Angels Listened In," and other sentimental tunes that highlighted their tight harmonies and showcased Maestro's lead tenor. Though the group underwent several lineup changes and eventually disbanded, their legacy endured through time. Albums like "Sixteen Candles - Greatest Hits" and collections such as "For Collectors Only" serve as testaments to their contribution to the genre, enabling new generations to discover their dulcet melodies and timeless stage presence.
