The Imagined Village

The Imagined Village is an innovative British folk musical project that originated in the late 2000s, spearheaded by Simon Emmerson of the Afro Celt Sound System. With a vision of reinvigorating traditional English folk music by infusing it with a variety of global musical influences, The Imagined Village brings together a diverse collective of musicians both old and new. Their lineup has included celebrated folk artists such as Martin Carthy and his daughter Eliza Carthy, along with contributions from musicians like sitar player Sheema Mukherjee, dub artist The Orb, drummer Andy Gangadeen, and many others. The project's cross-cultural blend explores Britain's multicultural landscape through the lens of folk music, challenging and redefining preconceived notions of national identity and musical tradition.

Their debut self-titled album, "The Imagined Village" (which includes the "Real World Gold" reissue), was released in 2007 and was met with critical acclaim for its unique approach to British music. This success was followed up by their albums "Empire & Love" in 2010 and "Bending The Dark" in 2012, each continuing the trend of fusing diverse sounds and styles into the rich tapestry of folk. Aside from studio recordings, the band has an enthralling live presence elucidated on their live rendition of "Bending the Dark (Live)". The group's progressive work, keenly showcased in tracks like "Winter Singing," has not only honored traditional narratives in modern garb but also invited listeners to partake in the evolving story of Britain’s musical heritage. "This Way to the Imagined Village" serves as an auditory beacon guiding fans and newcomers alike towards their inventive sonic realm.
