Akiko Ebi is a renowned Japanese pianist celebrated for her international career. Born in Osaka, Japan, she began playing the piano at the age of three and a half. Ebi's career took off after winning the National Piano Competition in Japan and later the 2nd Grand Prix at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris, where she also received four special prizes, including one from Arthur Rubinstein. She further distinguished herself with a laureate position at the Fryderyk Chopin International Competition in Warsaw and a fifth prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1980. Ebi has performed extensively across 37 countries, collaborating with numerous orchestras and conductors, and has appeared in major concert halls such as the Berlin Philharmonie and Suntory Hall. Her musical collaborations include a notable duo concert with Martha Argerich, which was televised internationally.
Ebi's discography includes recordings of Chopin, Ravel, and other notable composers. She has been recognized for her contributions to music, receiving the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1993 and Japan's ExxonMobile Music Prize in 2002. Ebi is also an active educator, frequently invited to give masterclasses worldwide and serving as a jury member in several prestigious competitions, including the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. She has been the president of the Japan Chopin Society for over a decade and chairs the planning committee for the Yokohama City International Piano Festival. Her recent releases reflect her deep engagement with classical piano repertoire, particularly the works of Chopin and Ravel.
