Inspiral Carpets emerged as a critical presence in the British indie music scene in the late 1980s and were one of the forerunners of the Madchester movement, with their sound characterised by psychedelic influences and organ-driven melodies. Originating from Oldham in Greater Manchester, the group originally came together in 1983 and went through several lineup changes before releasing their most impactful work. The band's classic lineup, known for much of their success, included Clint Boon (keyboards), Craig Gill (drums), Graham Lambert (guitar), Martyn Walsh (bass), and Tom Hingley (lead vocals), with Stephen Holt on vocals before Hingley and again after his departure.
Their discography includes notable albums such as "Life" (1990), "The Beast Inside" (1991), "Revenge of the Goldfish" (1992), and "Devil Hopping" (1994), with hit singles like "This Is How It Feels", which became an anthem capturing the zeitgeist of the era, and "Saturn 5". Despite disbanding in 1995, Inspiral Carpets have experienced several renaissances, reconvening in the 2000s and once again in 2011. Tragically, in 2016, original drummer Craig Gill passed away. The band's legacy has been sustained through reissues and remixes of their classic hits, like the 2023 remix of "This Is How It Feels" by The Go! Team, demonstrating the enduring appeal of their organ-fueled, electrifying sound.
