Orlande de Lassus, also known as Roland de Lassus or Orlando di Lasso, was a prolific and influential composer of the late Renaissance period. Born in Mons, in what is now Belgium, around 1532, Lassus's early life was marked by his exceptional musical talent, which led to his international career in music. By his mid-teens, he had already been kidnapped three times because of his beautiful singing voice—a testament to the high value placed on musical skill during the Renaissance. He eventually settled in Munich, where he served as a court musician to the Dukes of Bavaria for much of his career.

Throughout his life, Lassus composed over 2,000 works in multiple languages, including Latin, French, Italian, and German. His extensive catalogue embraces a wide array of styles ranging from sacred motets and masses to secular madrigals and chansons. Lassus was particularly known for his skillful blending of the complex polyphonic style that characterized the music of the Renaissance with the emotional expressiveness that would come to define the Baroque era. Some of Lassus's most notable compositions include his 'Prophetiae Sibyllarum,' a collection of motets characterized by their chromaticism, and his 'St. Matthew Passion,' a musical setting of the Passion according to St. Matthew. His ability to capture both the spiritual fervor and human sensitivity of his time has left a lasting legacy, with his works continuing to be performed and treasured centuries after his death in 1594.
