GO!GO!7188 was a vibrant Japanese rock trio that burst onto the scene in 1998, blending surf rock, punk energy, and hints of traditional Japanese melodies. Originally formed with guitarist/vocalist Yuu, bassist Akko, and drummer Turkey (later replaced by Naoki in 2004), the band carved out a unique niche with their scrappy garage-band rawness and catchy, riff-driven tunes. Their name—pronounced "Go Go Seven One Eight Eight"—reportedly came from a cheeky reference to a Tokyo telephone area code, embodying their playful, DIY spirit.
Over their 14-year run, they dropped cult-favorite albums like *虎の穴* ("Tora no Ana") and *鬣* ("Tategami"), mixing frenetic tracks with unexpectedly poetic lyrics. Known for electric live shows, they toured relentlessly before calling it quits in 2012, leaving behind a legacy that includes the bittersweet *Last Live Of Go! Go!…* recording from their 2010 farewell tour. Their discography, including the compilation *ベスト オブ ゴー!ゴー!*, remains a time capsule of Japan’s indie rock golden era.
