Philip Ledger was a highly respected British conductor, pianist, and composer, best known for his long and influential association with choral and sacred music. Born in 1937, he rose to prominence as the Director of Music at King’s College, Cambridge from 1974 to 1982, succeeding Sir David Willcocks. During his tenure, Ledger helped shape the famous Choir of King’s College into one of the most revered choral ensembles in the world, continuing and expanding its recorded legacy and leading its beloved annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.
In addition to his work with King's College, Sir Philip Ledger had a distinguished career as Principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). Known for his deep understanding of both historical and contemporary repertoire, he became a champion of British composers and made significant contributions through his own choral compositions and arrangements. He was knighted in 1999 for his services to music, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of classical and choral music.
