Speed, Glue & Shinki was a cult Japanese psychedelic rock band that created a stir in the early 1970s with their heavy, fuzz-laden sound and freewheeling improvisational style. The trio was composed of Filipino-Japanese guitarist Shinki Chen, who was regarded as one of Japan's greatest guitar players; drummer Joey Smith, who also handled vocals and was known for his powerful and unconventional drumming style; and bassist Masayoshi Kabe (also known as Mike Hanopol). The band's name is a whimsical combination of its members' nicknames—'Speed' referring to Smith's amphetamine-fueled energy, 'Glue' for Kabe's fondness for sniffing glue, and 'Shinki' from Chen's name.
Despite their brief existence, Speed, Glue & Shinki left an indelible mark on the landscape of Japanese rock with their distinct, raw sound that pushed the boundaries of the genre. Their debut album, "Eve," released in 1971, showcased a blend of psychedelic blues and rock with the occasional touch of funk and avant-garde, bringing them both acclaim and notoriety. Although they never achieved massive commercial success and disbanded shortly after their first album, their music has been rediscovered and celebrated by new generations of fans, leading to remastered versions of their work, such as the 2017 releases of "スピード・グルー&シンキ" and "イヴ 前夜," helping to secure their place in the pantheon of rock music eccentrics and innovators.
