The Lightning Seeds are a British alternative rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1989 by singer and guitarist Ian Broudie, originally as a solo studio project. Broudie, previously a member of the bands Big in Japan and Care, initially pursued producing for other acts before venturing into recording his own material. The name "The Lightning Seeds" is a play on a misheard lyric from Prince's song "Raspberry Beret." The project gradually evolved into a full band setup, bringing a blend of indie rock and pop that captured the optimism of the early '90s with a polished, catchy sound that was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.
Known for their melodic tunes fused with psychedelic influences, The Lightning Seeds achieved fame with hits such as "Pure" and "Lucky You," and their 1994 album "Jollification" became a landmark record of the era. The band's music is characterized by Broudie's distinctive, crisp production and knack for infectious choruses, which garnered them significant radio play and a dedicated fanbase. Perhaps their most notorious contribution to British pop culture came with the football anthem "Three Lions," co-written with comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner for the Euro '96 football tournament, which remains a beloved sports chant in the UK. After a period of inactivity, the band had a resurgence, continuing to charm new generations of listeners with their timeless sound, as evident in their 2021 album "See You in the Stars."
