**De Nieuwe Snaar** was a Flemish folk and cabaret group from Duffel, Belgium, active from 1982 to 2014. Initially a trio, the group expanded to a quartet in 2000. The members included Jan De Smet on vocals, accordion, ukulele, and slide-whistle; Kris De Smet on vocals, tin-whistle, English horn, and oboe; Geert Vermeulen on vocals, mandolin, violin, and guitar; and Walter Poppeliers on contrabass and trumpet from 2000 onwards. They were known for their light-hearted and humorous songs, often incorporating folk elements with a playful twist. One of their most notable contributions was the theme song for the TV program "De Pré Historie," titled "De Prehistorie," which was a cover of "Bread & Butter" by The Newbeats.
De Nieuwe Snaar released several albums during their career, including **Hartelijk Gefotografeerd**, **HACKáDJA**, **William**, **Revue**, **FaMineurZeven**, and **Originele Hits**. Their music often blended folk with cabaret elements, making them a beloved act in the Flemish music scene. The group announced their retirement in 2011 and performed their final show on April 25, 2014, at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp during "Nekka Nacht," an event honoring their legacy.
