Josh Lawrence is a celebrated jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader known for his dynamic performances and rich compositional voice. He serves as Director of Jazz Studies at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, leading their Arts Academy and Summer Camp jazz programs. With roots in Philadelphia, Lawrence has released multiple albums under Posi-Tone Records, including recent works like "Measured Response" and "And That Too." He has received multiple awards and commissions and earned two Grammy nominations performing with pianist Orrin Evans’ Captain Black Big Band. Beyond his solo work, he co-leads the Fresh Cut Orchestra and has collaborated with renowned artists such as Erykah Badu and Boyz II Men. Lawrence holds degrees from the University of the Arts and the Juilliard School and studied with jazz legend Barry Harris.
In addition to his recording and performing career, Lawrence is a dedicated educator, imparting his expertise through faculty roles in Philadelphia and programs like Ensemble Arts Philly, where he supports young jazz musicians. His music blends soulful trumpet work with inventive compositions, making him a distinctive voice in contemporary jazz today.
