Annamacharya

Annamacharya, also known as Tallapaka Annamacharya, was a 15th-century saint-poet and composer from South India, widely regarded as the earliest known composer in the Carnatic music tradition. Born in 1408 in what is now Andhra Pradesh, he dedicated his life to Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala and is said to have composed over 32,000 devotional songs, known as "sankirtanas", many of which praise the deity. His work seamlessly blends devotion, poetry, and classical music, and has had a deep and lasting impact on South Indian spiritual and musical traditions.

Annamacharya's compositions, written primarily in Telugu and occasionally in Sanskrit, cover themes of bhakti (devotion), dharma (righteousness), and social issues. Though many of his original compositions were lost for centuries, thousands were rediscovered engraved on copper plates in the 20th century and have since been set to music and performed by countless classical musicians. Today, his legacy lives on through popular devotional recordings and performances in temples and concert halls alike.
