Richard Tucker

Richard Tucker was one of the most celebrated American tenors of the 20th century, known especially for his powerful performances in the Italian opera repertoire. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1913, Tucker began his career as a cantor before making a stunning debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1945. He went on to become one of the Met's leading tenors for over three decades, admired for his robust voice, emotional intensity, and commanding presence on stage.

Tucker was particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of Verdi and Puccini roles, and frequently recorded and performed operas like Aida, Don Carlo, and La bohème. Beyond the opera house, he also made numerous television appearances and maintained strong ties to his Jewish faith and community throughout his life. His legacy continues through the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, which supports and honors young American opera singers.
