芸能山城組 (Geinoh Yamashirogumi) is a uniquely eclectic Japanese musical collective founded in 1974 by scientist and musician Tsutomu Ōhashi. The group is celebrated for blending traditional folk music from around the world with avant-garde electronic elements, lush choral arrangements, and philosophical themes drawn from both science and spirituality. Its members come from a wide range of professions—everything from students to engineers to doctors—reflecting the group's communal and interdisciplinary spirit.
They are perhaps best known internationally for their stunning work on the soundtrack to Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 anime film Akira. The music, particularly the dramatic "Kaneda" and "Requiem" tracks, played a huge role in establishing the film’s legendary atmosphere. Beyond Akira, their catalog includes albums like Ecophony Rinne and Ecophony Gaia, which showcase their immersive “symphonies” of voice, percussion, and global instrumentation. Geinoh Yamashirogumi remains a fascinating fusion of art, science, and sound exploration.
