Pankaj Mullick

Pankaj Mullick was a renowned Indian music composer, playback singer, and actor, born on May 10, 1905, in Kolkata. He was a pioneer in the field of film music, particularly in Bengali and Hindi cinema, during the advent of playback singing. Mullick was also an early exponent of Rabindra Sangeet, the songs of Rabindranath Tagore. His musical journey began with training in Indian classical music under Durgadas Bandyopadhyaya and later in Rabindra Sangeet under Dinendranath Tagore, Tagore's grandnephew. This exposure led to his lasting interest in Tagore's songs, and he became one of the leading exponents of Rabindra Sangeet.

Mullick's contributions to music were extensive. He worked with All India Radio, introducing music training programs like "Sangeet Shikshar Ashor," which significantly popularized Rabindra Sangeet among the masses. He composed music for numerous films and was associated with New Theatres, a prominent film production company. Mullick received several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri in 1970 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1973 for his lifetime contributions to Indian cinema. His legacy includes over 5,000 songs and collaborations with notable artists like K.L. Saigal and Hemanta Mukherjee.
