The Liverbirds

The Liverbirds were a trailblazing all-female rock band from Liverpool, formed in 1963 during the British Invasion craze. Originally consisting of Mary McGlory (bass), Sylvia Saunders (drums), Valerie Gell (guitar), and Pamela Birch (vocals/guitar), they became one of the rare girl groups to shred their own instruments in a male-dominated scene. Inspired by The Beatles’ success, they built a loyal following at Hamburg’s Star-Club and across Europe, delivering gritty covers of rock ’n’ roll classics like “Diddley Daddy” and “Peanut Butter” (both featured in their 2024 remastered releases). Despite disbanding in 1967, their legacy endured through compilations like *Complete Recordings* and live albums capturing their raw energy. Their 2024 revamps, including the stompy “Cavern Stomp” and a refreshed “Shop Around,” reintroduced their garage-rock spirit to new generations. A true “what could’ve been” story with undeniable swagger!
