The Folk Implosion

Folk Implosion was an alternative rock band, initially formed as a side project by Lou Barlow of Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr. fame, and John Davis in the early 1990s in Massachusetts. The band's name is a play on the term "folk explosion" and their sound is a unique blend of lo-fi, folk, and experimental rock. Folk Implosion gained a cult following with their understated melodies and folk-tinged arrangements, venturing into territories far more eclectic than the typical indie rock landscape of their time.

Their most notable success came with the song "Natural One", a sultry and entrancing single from the soundtrack of the film "Kids" directed by Larry Clark. The track became a surprise hit, climbing the charts and significantly raising the band’s profile. With albums like "Dare to Be Surprised" and "One Part Lullaby", which displayed the group's range from intimate, softly-sung ballads to more upbeat, densely layered tracks, Folk Implosion solidified their reputation as innovative musicians within the indie scene. Despite their limited mainstream presence, the intimacy and authenticity of their music have led them to be cherished by those who looked beyond the surface sheen of popular music in the 1990s and early 2000s.
