Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman is a legendary mridangam maestro and one of the towering figures in the world of Carnatic classical music. Known for his extraordinary rhythmic precision, creativity, and technical brilliance, he has accompanied many of the greatest Carnatic vocalists and instrumentalists over several decades. His performances are marked by a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, earning him immense respect from musicians and connoisseurs alike.
Born in Umayalpuram, Tamil Nadu, Sivaraman trained under doyens like Palghat Mani Iyer, and made a name for himself early with his command of laya (rhythm) and intricate tani avartanams (percussion solos). In recognition of his contributions, he has received some of India's highest civilian honors, including the Padma Vibhushan.
