Tariq Al-Sabir is a multifaceted composer, vocalist, music director, and interdisciplinary artist based in New York City, originally from Baltimore, Maryland. His work spans a rich spectrum of performance, sound design, poetry, theater, and film, creating a unique blend often described as "experimental soul." Al-Sabir infuses his music with themes of nature, technology, spirituality, and social commentary, particularly focusing on Black experiences in the digital age. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist and conservatory-trained vocalist, he has collaborated with notable artists like Blood Orange, Meredith Monk, and Ali Sethi, and has performed at prestigious venues such as The Shed, Lincoln Center, and The Public Theater. His multimedia song cycle *#UNWANTED* explores how technology intersects with social inequities, showcasing his flair for innovative storytelling through music and visuals.
Starting his career in 2006 with the theme song for HBO’s *The Wire*, Al-Sabir has grown into a celebrated educator and artist. He currently teaches songwriting at The Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and continues to produce original music, including his 2024 EP *Unlike Yesterday Today I’m Ready*, produced by Dev Hynes.
