Herbert Kegel was a German conductor known for his interpretations of the works of Bruckner and Shostakovich. He was born in Dresden in 1920 and studied conducting at the Dresden Conservatory. Kegel made his conducting debut in 1945 and went on to lead many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He was also the music director of the Dresden Staatskapelle from 1955 to 1977. Kegel died in 1990.
